Knocknacummer, Glentane Windfarm Developments

Client:
Bord Gais Energy

AWN was appointed by BGE to assess three different wind turbine technologies on three adjacent wind farm sites. The assessment was focused on identifying the cumulative impact of the three sites in question along with existing wind turbine facilities in the area.

A detailed 3D noise model of the site was developed in order to demonstrate worst case noise impacts considering all existing, permitted and planned developments in place.

A second stage of assessment was undertaken to assess a more realistic view of the likely noise impacts that considers the critical issue of wind directionality.

Based on the noise predictions and extensive review of the results curtailment matrices for specific wind directions and wind speeds were developed for each technology in order to allow the client to consider the impact of the turbine restrictions on the energy output of the various sites and in turn to inform the economic studies and ultimately the final choice of turbine technology that is to be installed. Also the noise predictions were considered in terms of the relevant planning conditions concerning noise. Also, where the planning conditions were inconsistent in their wording assessments were completed and advice given in relation to the sites compliance with the guidance contained within the relevant Planning Guidelines on Wind Energy and ETSU.
