In 2011, An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission to Iarnród Éireann for the construction and operation of the DART Underground rail scheme, the largest infrastructural development planned in Ireland to date. The project involves the development of a dual underground tunnel system connecting the Docklands area in north Dublin to Inchicore in the South via a number of new underground rail stations across the city.

The EIS and Railway Order involved an extensive study into the various potential environmental impacts associated with the scheme.

AWN prepared the assessment relating to the Above Ground Noise and Vibration impacts of the scheme. This involved a comprehensive impact study and mitigation assessment relating to the large scale surface construction works involving station mining, tunnel boring launch pits and cut and cover tunnel construction. The study also assessed the impacts associated with the operational phase including overground rail sections and all above ground operational noise sources.

AWN attended the oral hearing as noise and vibration experts for all impacts relating to Above Ground Noise and Vibration of the DART Underground.

Our role during the hearing included presenting the key findings in an objective and informative manner, the delivery of expert evidence along with responding to queries, submissions and cross examination throughout the 6 month process.
