AWN Consulting was appointed to assess the potential air quality and climate impacts associated with a proposed wind farm at Slieve Rushen in Co. Cavan. The scheme involved the construction and operation of 36 wind turbines, each producing 3MW of electricity leading to a combined power output of 108MW.

A review of national anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and long range transboundary pollutant emissions (nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2)) was also conducted to assess the receiving environment in terms of climate and regional air quality.

The positive impact of generating 108MW of green energy by the wind farm on air quality and climate was also determined by calculating the emissions resulting from the generation of the equivalent amount of energy by the burning of fossil fuels.
